The Spirit of Christmas Past

An artist friend Gabrielle Feldman always sends me her fantastical cards each year featuring angels and circus characters.

Gabrielle was an inspiration for me, as late in her mid-life, after her children all left home and her husband passed away, she returned to college to get her master's degree; painting and exhibiting beautiful and interesting realistic oil paintings of landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.

Here's a few of her Christmas past cards:

Opening the cards... her kindness and patience comes rushing back... I have very fond memories of Gabrielle including me in her drawing group, sharing her knowledge and latest paintings with me, inviting me to her shows, even treating me to her fabulous meals. We went on jaunts to see exhibits, to draw at circuses, and see dance theater in NYC. I will always be grateful for the encouragement she gave me to work hard at being creative and to love doing art even if it was not an assignment.

And that's what the holidays really are all about isn't it?.... remembering those that selflessly  touch our lives making them brighter.... and us all the better for it.

Yes, indeed - that is what the holidays are really all about.

What lovely, delicate and beautiful images from Gabrielle. How fortunate you are for such a friend.

Mary..hope this Christmas was a good one for you and yours!

The older I get the more often I think I'd better work harder at being kind while I still can. Gabrielle's example is a good one... plus the tremendous creative energy she put into her artwork after she was 50 makes me believe that there's still a future in mine for creating even better paintings.

So here's to 2010 filled with inspiring, interesting paintings by all us older women!
