A Whale of a Week

I promised to post the whale art illustration I was working on as art in progress then forgot and finished the art without taking pictures.
Orca Feeding on Salmon © Judith Hunt
watercolor, pencil, and gouache
The "Orca Feeding on Salmon" is one of several illustrations I am doing for a children's book published by a small publisher in California, Treasure Bay. The art was done in 2 days from start to finish.
It's been a whirlwind of a week with one to two illustrations being finished every single day for several different projects. Hard to think straight and even harder to get a decent meal cooked and eaten. Working 8 am to 10 pm to meet the deadlines.

Anyone dreaming about being an illustrator should never forget to add the long hours sitting on one's butt crouched over the drafting table to their dream.

Dear Judith:
I like what you said about not forgetting to add all the long hours to a freelance illustration career dream. I was a freelance illustrator for 25 years since graduation from Art Center in 87. Seems like I never had a life because I was to busy, then when it was slow I still didn't have a life, and getting work was a full time job. But I loved promoting myself and believe Art Directors need to see my book. I'm currently working full time at Disney Studios in Anaheim as a scenic artist for the past five years. Its a good job where I can go into work everyday, pick up my brushes and paint all day. I enjoy the steady income, bennies, and rewards of thousands of people seeing my work in the park. When I get home I can do anything I want and I enjoy the freedom of working on my unique sketchbook. fredsmithart.com But I do miss freelancing! I love your wildlife work, I now consider myself a wildlife illustrator. 6 years ago I illustrated four children's books for SOUNDPRINTS.com , a good company who publishes a lot of animal books for children. If you are not familiar with them please check them out.
I Wish you much success,
Fred Smith

Fred,
Your children's books look lovely. I can tell you really enjoy drawing animals!
I find wildlife both challenging and interesting to paint and draw...patterns and textures and a living breathing creature all rolled into one.
Thanks for your kind comment. I am moving the farm to the West Coast so maybe we'll meet up someday!
